Types of dental implant treatment

'Getting implants' can mean anything from one tooth to a whole new set. These are the four main options, and who each one suits.

Short answer

The four main options are: a single implant with a crown, for one missing tooth; an implant bridge, where two or more implants support several teeth; an implant-retained (clip-on) denture on two to four implants; and a full-arch fixed bridge on four to six implants per jaw. The right one depends on how many teeth are missing and on your bone.

Single implant and crown

One implant, one crown. It's the usual choice for a single missing tooth between healthy teeth, because it doesn't involve reshaping the neighbouring teeth as a bridge would.

Implant bridge

When several teeth in a row are missing, two or more implants can support a bridge of teeth across the gap. This usually needs fewer implants than replacing each tooth separately.

Clip-on (implant-retained) denture

A denture that clips onto two to four implants, so it doesn't slip, but still comes out for cleaning. It's often a big improvement for people with a loose lower denture. Our sister guide explains clip-on dentures in detail.

Full-arch fixed bridge

A complete row of fixed teeth on four to six implants per jaw. It stays in all the time. Treatments on four implants are often called All-on-4®, which is a trademark of Nobel Biocare. Our sister guide covers four versus six implants.

Which is right for you?

It depends on how many teeth are missing, the health of the teeth you have left, your bone, and whether you want removable or fixed teeth. Your dentist should explain why they recommend one option over the others. See am I suitable?

Common questions

Do I need one implant for every missing tooth?

No. A bridge can span several teeth on two implants, and a full arch of 10 to 14 teeth can be held by four to six implants.

What are mini implants?

Narrower implants sometimes used in limited situations, such as stabilising a lower denture where bone is narrow. Ask your dentist whether they're suitable and why.

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4® is Nobel Biocare's trademarked concept for a full arch on four implants. Full arches can also be placed on five or six implants.
