The dental implant procedure, step by step

Implant treatment happens in stages, usually over a few months. Knowing what each stage involves makes it far less daunting.

Short answer

Treatment usually starts with a consultation, an examination and X-rays or a 3D scan to check your bone. The implant is then placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic and left to heal, usually for around four months. Once it has bonded with the bone, a crown, bridge or denture is attached. Sometimes a tooth can be fitted on the same day.

1. Consultation

The Oral Health Foundation says your implant dentist will examine your mouth, check the health and strength of your jawbone, and confirm whether implants are suitable. Expect:

  • questions about your medical history, medicines and smoking
  • X-rays, and often a 3D (cone beam) scan to see the bone in detail
  • a discussion of the alternatives, such as a bridge or denture

2. A written treatment plan

You should always receive a clear plan that explains each stage and the costs involved. A good plan also names the implant brand and the material of the final tooth. If any extra procedure such as a bone graft might be needed, it should say so.

3. Placing the implant

The implant is gently placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. If a tooth needs removing first, this may happen on the same day or some weeks earlier, depending on the site. Stitches may be used, and a healing cap or temporary tooth is fitted.

4. Healing

The implant is left to bond with the bone. The Oral Health Foundation says this usually takes around four months. You may wear a temporary tooth or denture during this time. Keep the area clean and follow your dentist's advice on food.

5. The final tooth

Once healed, an abutment is connected and your crown, bridge or denture is made and fitted. Your dentist checks the fit and your bite, and shows you how to clean around it.

Same-day teeth

In some cases a replacement tooth can be fitted on the same day as the implant. This depends on the bone and on how firmly the implant is held, so only your dentist can say whether it's right for you.

Recovery tips

  • eat soft foods for the first few days
  • avoid smoking, which slows healing
  • keep the area clean as your dentist shows you
  • contact your dentist if pain or swelling gets worse after a few days, or if you have a fever

Common questions

Does implant surgery hurt?

It's done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Some swelling and soreness for a few days afterwards is normal; your dentist will advise on pain relief.

How long does the surgery take?

It depends on how many implants are placed. Ask your dentist for an estimate for your plan.

Can I go to work the next day?

Many people can, after a straightforward single implant. After more extensive surgery you may want a few days' rest. Ask your dentist.

What is 'teeth in a day'?

It means fitting a temporary tooth or bridge soon after the implant is placed. The Oral Health Foundation says this is possible in some cases; it depends on how firmly the implant is held in the bone.
