How to look after your dental implants

Implants can't decay, but the gum and bone around them can become infected. Good daily care is the single biggest thing you can do to keep them for years.

Short answer

The Oral Health Foundation says cleaning implants is similar to cleaning natural teeth: brush for two minutes last thing at night and at least once more each day with fluoride toothpaste, clean carefully around each implant daily with interdental brushes, and go to regular dental and hygiene appointments.

Every day

  • brush for two minutes, last thing at night and at least once more during the day
  • use a fluoride toothpaste
  • clean carefully around each implant with interdental brushes
  • under an implant bridge or full arch, use super floss or a water flosser

Check-ups

Go to regular dental and hygiene appointments so your dental team can check the implant stays healthy. Give your dentist your implant passport and X-rays, especially if your implants were placed elsewhere.

Things to avoid

  • smoking, which raises the risk of implant problems
  • chewing very hard things such as ice, especially on crowns
  • ignoring bleeding gums around an implant

If you grind or clench your teeth, ask about a night guard.

How long implants last

The Oral Health Foundation says implants that are well cared for often last a very long time, but there's no lifetime guarantee. The crown, bridge or denture on top may need repairing or replacing over the years.
